Abstract Preview:
The groundwater level in the Chemoga watershed has been declining due to an increase in water demand, anthropogenicactivities, and climate change effects. This paper uses the WetSpass-MODFLOW coupling to evaluate the groundwater rechargein the Chemoga watershed. The MODFLOW groundwater flow simulation model is then used to simulate the hydraulic headdistribution based on these findings. The input data of WetSpass models are soil, land cover, topography, slope, and ground-water depth, as well as monthly meteorological characteristics (such as temperature, wind speed, and rainfall). The long-termspatial and temporal average annual precipitation of 1,453 mm is distributed as 169 mm (11.63%) groundwater recharge and879 mm (60.5%) surface runoff, while 405 mm (27.87%) is lost through evapotranspiration. In such seasonal variations, thegroundwater head due to the wet/summer stress period varied from 4 to 41 m. While in the dry/winter stress period ground-water head varied from 3.5 to 39.8 m, and also the groundwater head due to the annual stress period varied from 3.7 to 40 m.The findings are extensive and can be applied to water resource management and groundwater resource development in asustainable manner by safeguarding high groundwater recharge locations, and reevaluating allowable groundwater abstractionrates.Key words: ArcGis, Chemoga watershed, groundwater recharge, hydraulic head, MODFLOW, WetSpass-M model

Background Inadequate glycemic management in type 2 diabetes Mellitus patients is a serious public healthissue and a key risk factor for progression as well as diabetes-related complications. The main therapeutic goal ofpreventing organ damage and other problems caused by diabetes is glycemic control. Knowing when to modifyglycemic control in type 2 diabetes Mellitus is crucial for avoiding complications and early drug intensifications.Methods An institutional based retrospective follow-up study was undertaken among 514 eligible adult diabetespatients in Amhara region Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia, from January 2017 to January2022. Simple random sampling technique was used to select study participants. The Kaplan Meier curve was usedto assess the survival status of categorical variables, and the log-rank test was used to compare them. The coxproportional hazard model was fitted to identify the predictors of time to first optimal glycemic control. Variables witha p-value < 0.05 were considered to be statistically significance at 95% confidence interval.Results A total of 514 patient records (227 males and 287 females) were reviewed in this study. The median time tofirst optimal glycemic control among the study population was 8.4 months IQR (7.6–9.7). The predictors that affect thetime to first optimal glycemic control were age group ((AHR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.463, 0.859 for 50–59 years), (AHR = 0.638,95% CI = 0.471, 0.865 for 60–69 years), and (AHR = 0.480, 95% CI = 0.298, 0.774 for > = 70 years)), diabetes neuropathy(AHR = 0.629, 95% CI = 0.441,0.900), hypertension (AHR = 0.667, 95% CI = 0.524, 0.848), dyslipidemia (AHR = 0.561, 95%CI = 0.410, 0.768), and cardiovascular disease (AHR = 0.681, 95% CI = 0.494, 0.938).Conclusion The median time to initial optimal glycemic control in type 2 diabetes Mellitus patients in this study wasshort. Eucalyptus is the most preferred exotic species in diferent parts of Ethiopia, particularly in the northern part of the country,including the study area. Socioeconomic, institutional, and endowment variables are an infuence on the production of thisspecies. Te purpose of this study was to identify determinants of Eucalyptus woodlot production for producer farmers in thestudy area. Multistage sampling techniques were used in order to select the district, kebeles, and household heads to beinterviewed. Te district and the kebeles were selected purposefully based on their high potential for Eucalyptus production,whereas ninety-six (96) sampled respondent farmers were selected by using simple random sampling techniques. A multiple linearregression (OLS) model was used to run the determinants of Eucalyptus woodlot production, and descriptive statistics were usedto describe the socioeconomic characteristics of smallholder Eucalyptus producers in the form of means, frequencies, andpercentages. Te respondents use Eucalyptus products for construction and fuel wood. Rural farmers produced about 70% ofconstruction wood products and 30% of fuel wood products annually. Five variables (i.e., woodlot size, woodlot density, andmarket information) signifcantly afected woodlot production, whereas the age of farmers and market distance were negativelyafected. In order to produce better income from Eucalyptus products, the collaboration eforts of all responsible groups (i.e.,farmers, researchers, governments, and others) should be required.

Abstract: The continuous reduction in peri-urban agricultural land due to spatial urban expansionforces subsistence farmers to seek arable land through different land access strategies. Among these,land rental transactions are crucial for accessing arable land across different regions. This studyaimed to examine factors affecting land rental transactions in the peri-urban areas of the East GojjamAdministrative Zone in Ethiopia. Data were collected from 353 household heads of peri-urban areas,who were affected by expropriation. A total of 350 valid responses were analyzed using descriptiveand inferential statistics and an econometrics model. The results indicated that 58% of the respondentsparticipated in both renting and renting out land, which underlines the importance of land rentaltransactions in the peri-urban areas. Specifically, 60% of female-headed households were engagedin land rental transactions, with 14% renting in and 46% renting out land. In contrast, 38% of themale-headed respondents rented land, while only 19% rented out land. The model result identifiedsex, landholding size, number of oxen, participation in off-farm activities, and extension service assignificant determinant variables for renting land. Households made land rental agreements bothorally and in written documents, with oral agreements being more prevalent. Transaction dueswere conducted through sharecropping and fixed rents, with sharecropping being the most commonmethod. The presentstudy intended to describe how interactants attending a freshman common course in an Ethiopianuniversity elicit and display recipiency in instances of Divergent L2 contexts exhibiting DIUs.Naturally occurring video-recorded classroom interactions of the purposively selected in-teractants have been analyzed in light of the Conversation Analytic framework to show howinteractants elicit and display recipiency. By deploying reactive tokens, incipient speakersnegotiate their rights to shape and reshape trajectories of an ongoing thereby displaying recipi-ency. This contributes to a better understanding of how interactures, in this case the establish-ment of intersubjectivity and L2 contexts, interplay and unfold in moments of DIUs. Also, viewinginteractants as incipient speakers, and thereby articulating turns in view of recipients is a con-dition for sustaining intersubjectivity through active engagement. This requires upholding un-wavering belief about recipients’ stake in an interactional exchange. O. abyssinica, known in Ethiopia as lowland bamboo, is a solid-stemmed clump-forming bamboo species widelydistributed in the western dry regions of Ethiopia. The versatility of the species means that it has enormouspotential for land restoration in arid and semi-arid areas, in addition to bringing socio-economic benefits. It alsodisplays remarkable adaptability, allowing it to thrive in the challenging ecological conditions of areas such asthe Abay Gorge. The Abay Gorge, situated within the Upper Blue Nile River Basin of Northwestern Ethiopia ischaracterized by problems associated with soil erosion and land degradation. This study, therefore, aimed toevaluate and recommend a suitable spatial analysis for the adoption and development of lowland bamboo(O. abyssinica). Fifteen primary influencing factors were chosen according to the needs of O. abyssinica, theaccessibility of data, and the financial implications associated with data analysis, particularly the expensesrelated to soil laboratory testing. Eight composite soil samples were taken directly by dividing the watershed intotwo categories (upper and lower catchment areas). These composite soil samples were analyzed. Data analysiswas performed via Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in conjunction with Multi-Criteria Decision-Making(MCDM) analysis and the use of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS). The spatialanalysis employed in this study was a weighted sum overlay analysis, which was applied by considering thecriteria weight assigned to each factor. The analysis revealed that 21.2 % (666.5 ha) of the total area was highlysuitable for the growth and development of O. abyssinica. About 56 % (1753 ha) of the land was moderately andmarginally suitable for the desired land utilization type. However, 23 % (723.8 ha) of the study area was un-suitable for O. abyssinica. O. abyssinica has the potential to rehabilitate large parts of challenging areas such as theAbay Gorge due to its naturally invase rhizomes and drought-tolerance. It can also be introduced into agrofor-estry systems and used as living fences for villages.

In the post-1991 period, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front clearly endorsed the separationof state and religion. More importantly, the government is obliged to deliver equal protection for the peacefulworshiping and well-being of religious institutions. However, there is little or no protection given to the Ethi-opian Orthodox Church and Christians, specifically in the post 2018 political transition. Therefore, this studyexamines the most devastating and selective murdering and slaughtering of Orthodox Christians and the de-molition of the church a few months after a new governmental transition took place in April 2018. To do so, thispaper applied the theory of “religious victimization” to analyze the interplay between the so-called politicalreform and religious practice since 2018. In this respect, a qualitative research approach with a case researchdesign was used: ten in-depth interviews, three focus group discussions, field observations, and secondarysources analysis. According to the findings, thematic analysis was applied by arranging items in the team basedon their similarities. The results of the study also revealed that there were mass killings and demolition of or-thodox Christian properties in the Ethio-Somalia, Oromia, and Sidama regions of Ethiopia. Vandalism wassupposed to be systematic and well-planned. In this study, the researchers strongly recommend that the gov-ernment identify intervention strategies to stop the atrocities of Ethiopian Christians.

Introduction One of the most important but underappreciated roles of nurses is patient advocacy. To advocatefor patients effectively, the nurses should have a favorable attitude towards patient advocacy. Despite this fact, thenurses’ attitude towards patient advocacy was not known in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess nurses’ attitudetowards patient advocacy and its associated factors in East Gojjam Zone Public Hospitals, Northwest in 2023.Methods Institutional-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 385 nurses in East Gojjam ZonePublic Hospitals from March 1 to April 30, 2023. Nurses were selected using simple random sampling techniquesfrom 11 public hospitals. The data were collected in a self-administered way. Binary logistic regression was used fordata analysis. All independent variables having a P value of < 0.25 in the bivariable logistic regression were fitted intoa multivariable logistic regression. The AOR at a 95% confidence interval was used to identify the strength of theassociation, and a p value of 0.05 was used to declare it statistically significant at the final model.Result A total of 385 nurses participated in the study, for a 91% response rate. Among these, 49.9% of nurses hadan unfavorable attitude. Being working in a primary hospital [AOR = 2.3; 95% CI: (1.4–3.8)], poor cooperation ofnurses [AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: (1.1–2.8)], being unsatisfied with the job [AOR = 1.7; 95% CI: (1.1–2.7)], and poor perceivedsupervision of work [AOR = 6.2; 95% CI: (3.7–9.8)] were factors associated with nurses’ attitudes towards patientadvocacy.Conclusion The number of nurses who had an unfavorable attitude towards patient advocacy was high. Workingin a primary hospital, poor cooperation with others, being dissatisfied with the job, and having an unfavorableperception towards the supervision of work were the factors associated with the unfavorable attitude of nursestowards patient advocacy. Introduction One of the most important but underappreciated roles of nurses is patient advocacy. To advocatefor patients effectively, the nurses should have a favorable attitude towards patient advocacy. Despite this fact, thenurses’ attitude towards patient advocacy was not known in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess nurses’ attitudetowards patient advocacy and its associated factors in East Gojjam Zone Public Hospitals, Northwest in 2023.Methods Institutional-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 385 nurses in East Gojjam ZonePublic Hospitals from March 1 to April 30, 2023. Nurses were selected using simple random sampling techniquesfrom 11 public hospitals. The data were collected in a self-administered way. Binary logistic regression was used fordata analysis. All independent variables having a P value of < 0.25 in the bivariable logistic regression were fitted intoa multivariable logistic regression. The AOR at a 95% confidence interval was used to identify the strength of theassociation, and a p value of 0.05 was used to declare it statistically significant at the final model.Result A total of 385 nurses participated in the study, for a 91% response rate. Among these, 49.9% of nurses hadan unfavorable attitude. ABSTRACT: β-Lactam antibiotics are employed to treat bacterial illnesses.Despite a high level of clinical success, they have encountered serious resistancethat demands a high-dose regimen and a new pharmacokinetic combination. Thisrequires continuous monitoring of their levels in pharmaceutical and biologicalsamples. In this study, an electrochemical sensor was developed for thedetermination of cephalexin (CLN) in pharmaceutical formulations and biologicalfluid samples. The sensors were developed by modifying a glassy carbon electrode(GCE) using a conducting polymer (dipicrylamine) by potentiodynamicelectropolymerization. Characterization (using cyclic voltammetry and electronimpedance spectroscopy) results revealed modification of the electrode surface,leading to an enhanced effective electrode surface area and their conductivity. Theappearance of an irreversible oxidative peak at much-reduced potential with 5-foldcurrent enhancement at a poly(dipicrylamine)-modified glassy carbon electrode(poly(DPA)/GCE) verified the electrocatalytic role toward CLN. Under optimizedconditions, a wider linear concentration range (5 × 10−8 to 3.0 × 10−4 M), lowest limit of detection (LoD) (2.5 nM), detectedamount of each tablet brand above 97.00% of the labeled value (showing excellent agreement between the detected amount andcompany label), and excellent % recovery results in pharmaceutical and biological samples were obtained with an excellentinterference recovery error of less than 4.05%. Its excellent accuracy, selectivity, reproducibility, and stabilities and only requiring asimple electrode modification step combined with its readily available and nontoxic modifier, which sets it apart from mostpreviously reported methods, have validated the present method’s potential applicability for determining CLN in biological andpharmaceutical samples.

Studies indicate that students who have access to highly qualified teachers tendto achieve at a higher rate, regardless of other factors. However, the essenceof quality teaching and teacher quality has not been adequately establishedin these studies. Nonetheless, recent developments favoring integrationshave led to three lines of teaching quality research: professional standards,value-added measures, and student evaluations. This study explores howthe quality of mathematics and English language teachers is associated withstudents’ achievement using a professional standard observation tool for studentevaluation. A representative multistage sample of students and teachers selectedfrom high schools in the East Gojjam Administrative Zone participated in thestudy. By using the domains in the Framework for Teaching (FfT) as indicatorsof teaching quality, the study identified the indicators that are associated withthe academic achievement of students in mathematics and English subjects. Amultiple linear regression analysis was used to study the relationships betweenthe independent variables (teachers’ quality indicators) and the dependentvariable (students’ grade 10 exam scores). Of the four domains of FfT, the deliveryof instruction revealed a positive and significant association (sig = 016) withstudents’ scores in the English language. The delivery of instruction encompassescommunicating with students, using questioning and discussion techniques,and demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness, which are positively associatedwith students’ scores in the English language. Conversely, managing classroomprocedures was the only subdomain associated (sig = 014) with an increasein students’ mathematics scores.
